You apply the half-year convention by dividing the result ($400) by 2. Depreciation for the first year under the 200% DB method is $200. The recovery period begins on the placed in service date determined by applying the convention. The remaining recovery period at the beginning of the next tax year is the full recovery period less the part for which depreciation was allowable in the first tax year. If this convention applies, the depreciation you can deduct for the first year that you depreciate the property depends on the month in which you place the property in service. Figure your depreciation deduction for the year you place the property in service by multiplying the depreciation for a full year by a fraction. The numerator of the fraction is the number of full months in the year that the property is in service plus ½ (or 0.5). The following table shows the declining balance rate for each property class and the first year for which the straight line method gives an equal or greater deduction.

Your depreciation deduction for the year cannot be more than the part of your adjusted basis in the stock of the corporation that is allocable to your business or income-producing property. You must also reduce your depreciation deduction if only a portion of the property is used in a business or for the production of income. You begin to depreciate your property when you place it in service for use in your trade or business or for the production of income. You stop depreciating property either when you have fully recovered your cost or other basis or when you retire it from service, whichever happens first. You can depreciate leased property only if you retain the incidents of ownership in the property (explained below). This means you bear the burden of exhaustion of the capital investment in the property.

Certain property for which recovery periods assigned

You generally can’t deduct in one year the entire cost of property you acquired, produced, or improved and placed in service for use either in your trade or business or income-producing activity if the property is a capital expenditure. Depreciation is the recovery of the cost of the property over a number of years. You deduct a part of the cost every year until you fully recover its cost.

The first section, Specific Depreciable Assets Used in All Business Activities, Except as Noted, generally lists assets used in all business activities. The second section, Depreciable Assets Used in the Following Activities, describes assets used only in certain activities. Use the resulting business cost to figure your section 179 deduction. If you deducted an incorrect amount of depreciation in any year, you may be able to make a correction by filing an amended return for that year. If you are not allowed to make the correction on an amended return, you may be able to change your accounting method to claim the correct amount of depreciation. If you use the standard mileage rate to figure your tax deduction for your business automobile, you are treated as having made an election to exclude the automobile from MACRS. A request to revoke the election is a request for a letter ruling. You can elect to claim a 100% special depreciation allowance for the adjusted basis of certain specified plants (defined later) bearing fruits and nuts planted or grafted after September 27, 2017, and before January 1, 2023.

As part of Richard’s pay, Richard is allowed to use one of the company automobiles for personal use. If you have a short tax year after the tax year in which you began depreciating property, you must change the way you figure depreciation for that property. If you were using the percentage tables, you can no longer use them. You must figure depreciation for the short tax year and each later tax year as explained next. For a short tax year of 4 or 8 full calendar months, determine quarters on the basis of whole months. The midpoint of each quarter is either the first day or the midpoint of a month. Treat property as placed in service or disposed of on this midpoint.

The sales contract showed that the building cost $100,000 and the land cost $20,000. The building’s unadjusted basis is its original cost, $100,000. If there are no adjustments to the basis of the property other than depreciation, your depreciation deduction for each subsequent year of the recovery period will be as follows.
